The object of this database is to provide a resource of primary research material, which may be of use to students and researchers across a variety of disciplines. The database comprises ‘spiritual autobiographies’ of individuals resident in the Glastonbury area, who tell their personal stories of spiritual questing - who has influenced them, what disciplines they have engaged in and what has happened as a result.
Glastonbury offers a complex tapestry of both ancient and modern myth, spirituality and pilgrimage, which is reflected in the diverse contemporary spiritual community that has gathered here over the last 40 years. Many of the individuals listed on this database have engaged in regular spiritual practice for decades and their stories reveal much about the nature of spirituality in modern Britain.
Each entry is broken down into three sections. Firstly, the core focus of the individual – how they would describe themselves. Secondly, a summary of the autobiography, breaking it down into specific headings. Thirdly, the narrative story itself.
Researchers need to complete the Register page in order to gain access to the database. By registering to use this database, researchers agree that they will only use the autobiographies for recognised academic purposes, to respect the sensitivity of the material and not to use it to the detriment of the contributors.
A search engine has been provided for the use of the researcher to search for key words and areas of specific interest. Contact details are provided for all participants, if researchers wish to enter into dialogue with relevant individuals.
